What is a Partition in a HDD?

  • Assigning logical names of (s) for HDD to access (Read/ Write) data in HDD is called as Partition.
  • Logical names of HDD start from C: to Z:

Types of Partition in HDD:

1. Primary DOS Partition:

  • The first partition which is used for starting Operating system (O.S).
  • Generally Drive Letter for Primary DOS Partition is "C:"

2. Extended DOS Partition:

  • Extend means increase 
  • If you want to create more than one partition in HDD, than create Extended Partition.

    Logical DOS Drive:

  • Diving extended DOS partition into small logical partitions called as Logical DOS Drives.

3. Non-Dos Partition:

  • Non-DOS means which O.Ss not belong to Microsoft Family (Ex: Unix / Linux / Novell Netware)
  • If you want to install ( UNIX / LINUX O.S ) other than Microsoft Family O.S , than create Non-DOS Partition.
